Although the Grand Theft Auto franchise allows and encourages law-breaking, the possibility of punishment and arrest are also part of the series. The cops of Grand Theft Auto are polarizing figures, alternating between incredible competence and laughable incompetence at the whims of the games’ AI.

Redditor UndeadWarrior25 shared a 9-second-long video showing player character Tommy Vercetti riding on a motorcycle at unsafe speeds. Things quickly go out of control as they jerk to the side, bringing the motorcycle onto the sidewalk and then into a metal pole, sending Tommy Vercetti flying. While in midair, the character smacks into a police officer walking calmly up the sidewalk and is promptly arrested, with the screen freezing on a shot of Tommy Vercetti slamming horizontally into the cop’s chest. This isn’t the first time a Grand Theft Auto player has been arrested under strange circumstances, but it may be one of the funniest.
While this may seem like one of the glitches introduced in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition at first glance, this event appears to have its roots in the original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The police force in Grand Theft Auto is often portrayed as corrupt, but gameplay often shows the cops to be hyperfocused on ruining the player’s day. Though the police may not always notice a player nearby, even the slightest contact with an officer can get gamers in deep trouble–no matter how fast the player is moving at the time.
As of writing, it appears that other fans are impressed by the cop’s quick reflexes. Rockstar Games’ reputation may be in jeopardy at the moment, but the same cannot be said for the police force of Vice City, with a significant number of users posting in support of the heavily-armed and trigger-happy officers. One group of users discussed their belief that Vice City’s cops were the most aggressive police department in the series. Another joked that the cop had caught Tommy Vercetti like Captain America catches his shield, while a third stated that this was what it was like to go up against Max Payne.
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
