Back in 2020, gangs of Grand Theft Auto Online players dressed up in alien costumes and began beating each other up with baseball bats. The gangs would drive around in vans and attack other players in an impromptu event held by other players rather than the developers. Eventually, the event culminated in a massive battle between the green and purple aliens, after which the alien war came to a close.

Now, some Redditors are bringing out the old alien costumes and getting ready to restart the alien war. Redditor hannibalxyz shared a story of a recent adventure with a group of purple aliens, complete with a screenshot. Apparently, they met some purple aliens–who promptly beat them up–and then the whole group drove around and beat up other players. Hannibalxyz stated that it felt like a blast from the past, and they enjoyed themselves immensely.
Another Redditor, itsryanchump, created a graphic to announce the alien war 2.0 event–not to be confused with Grand Theft Auto Online’s Halloween alien invasion event. The graphic features three costumed green aliens and three costumed purple aliens on each side of the Grand Theft Auto Online map. In between the two sides, the word “GTA Alien War” are shown in the Grand Theft Auto title font. A sticky comment from a mod underneath the post explains how players looking to join the new alien war can get green and purple gang user flairs.
It appears that many Grand Theft Auto fans are looking forward to the chance to participate in a new alien war. Several fans openly mourned that they hadn’t been able to participate in the original alien war. Other users expressed that it felt like the original alien war had only taken place a few months ago rather than two years ago. This could be connected to the way the pandemic has distorted many peoples’ sense of time. One user noted that the first alien war had such an impact on them that they still kill any alien they see.
Grand Theft Auto Online is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms, with its next-gen version set to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles in March 2022.
